Our Story

The Freeman family has been in the green industry for over 90 years and through four generations.

Current owner of Freeman Landscape Brent Freeman’s grandfather, Claude Marshall Freeman, completed military service in France and Germany during World War I. Inspired by the beautiful European gardens he witnessed there, he returned home to Simms, Texas, built a greenhouse, and started growing plants out of coffee cans as a hobby. Eventually, people from the community started asking him for different plants, and by 1925, a business had been born. In 1955, Claude’s son Curtis joined his father in the horticulture field, and together they expanded the company to provide wholesale and retail plants, as well as landscaping services, to the people of Simms; Curtis handled the wholesale division, and his wife, Marie, handled the retail division. Around 1970, the Freeman family opened a retail store in Texarkana and began landscaping the Ark-La-Tex. In 1984, Curtis’ son Brent graduated from Texas A&M College station with a degree in landscape architecture and took over the landscaping business. His brother Mark when to work wholesale with their father, and his brother Scot went to work retail with their mother.

Today, Brent and Lissa Freeman are the owners of Freeman Landscape. Brent is the landscape architect and licensed irrigation technician. Lissa has extensive background in greenhouse and horticulture. Oldest son, Jason, is the landscape and irrigation supervisor. He is a licensed irrigator and licensed pesticide applicator. Daughter, Megan Lewis, is the office manager. Her husband, Tim Lewis, ins the general manager and turf management specialist. Son Marshall Freeman is the landscape and maintenance supervisor. He is a licensed irrigator and licensed pesticide applicator. His wife, Summer Freeman, is the office assistant and marketing coordinator. “It is a family business where we are blessed to have our immediate family working together,” Lissa said. “The Freeman family has lived in Bowie County since the 1800s. We want to remain a family business for many more generations to come and continue to server the Ark-La-Tex.”

“We hold ourselves to a higher standard,” she continued. “We are licensed professionals with experience in all outdoor fields. We have on-staff a landscape architect, four licensed irrigation technicians, and three licensed pesticide applicators. With our background of over 90 years of horticultural experience, we fully understand how to beautify your yard for you to enjoy.”

While providing local services in one of the Freemans’ top sources of pride, they also strive to be local consumers as well, “We buy our plants locally, and we enjoy giving back to the community,” Brent said. “We are proud to support other local business and appreciate all of our friends and family doing the same for us.”

The full range of services offered by the business cannot be expressed through their company name. “We do landscaping, irrigation, pergolas, patios, walkways, outdoor living areas, water features, ponds, mowing, weed control, fertilization, bed maintenance, Christmas lights and more,” Lissa said.

They view providing these services as a calling from God. “We believe our purpose in life is to help bring out the Lord’s beauty in the earth and help create an appreciation for nature and what God has created while spreading the joy of the Lord,” Lissa said. “We do not mind sharing our story of trials and tribulations leading to our lives being changed by Christ. We are proud and thankful of how far God has brought our family and our business, and we will continue to follow the Lord and His plan for our lives.”

In their free time, too, the family is together, enjoying one another’s company. Brent and Lissa’s youngest son, Carder, attends Pleasant Grove Elementary School, and daughter-in-law Krissi Freeman, wife of Jason, works as a registered nurse. “We all absolutely love spending time with our own family outdoors and providing our customers with a relaxing and beautiful outdoor space to do the same, “Brent said. “We work to make our customers’ backyard dreams become a reality. We strive to exceed their expectations and provide them with a landscaped sanctuary where they can enjoy spending time with their friends and family they the way we do with ours.”

To them, the American Dream is the intersection of entrepreneurship, family, and service to the Lord. “Years ago, the Freeman family was separated and living different lives,” Lissa said. “In 2009, Brent and I gave our lives over to the Lord, Soon after God worked in our lives and brought the entire family together. By 2014, all of our kids were working together at Freeman Landscape. God has greatly blessed our family by bringing us all together doing what we love.”
